Introduction

Mediation started as an alternative to courts that became more and more crowded with cases. Thankfully, in time, mediation grew to more sectors, including in schools and universities where it getting widespread attention both as a field of study and as a peaceful conflict resolution method.

Schools are at the heart of local communities. How a school is perceived by the community impacts on its reputation and its community members. This is extended to how people approach disputes as well as to their ability to prevent conflict.

If mediation will be placed in the context of education systems, where it belongs, the society will step in the right direction by treating differences amicably, in acknowledgement of the diversity of views and in pursuit of the opportunities for an improved future without the unnecessary challenges of uncontained conflict.

Some of our mediators are not only very experienced with mediation, but also seasoned professors with the highest academic titles and a great ability to understand and process information specific to the education systems. 

What is mediation

But what exactly is mediation and how does a typical mediation process look like? 

Mediation is a confidential process of communication and negotiation that is managed by a neutral and impartial professional with no decision-making abilities, the mediator. The aim is to prevent, manage, resolve or end a dispute, thus avoiding the increase of tensions, costs and risks, generated even by taking it in the courts of law. Mediation gives all participants the opportunity to craft the rules that govern the dialogue process, to have a voice, to present their perspectives and to propose options that take into account what is most important to them.

In order to achieve these objectives, the mediator can meet jointly but also separately with the participants in the mediation. Also, in order to ensure all the conditions for an informed decision, the parties are encouraged to be advised in the mediation room by lawyers or other advisors. They have an essential role and become veritable agents of reality in mediation.
